Week 32

A WONDERFUL AND AWFUL WEEK
ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

THE WONDERFUL:

This week Mickey sent more photos from her birthday celebration, so naturally we talked about how the rest of her birthday went. She loved her day.
The Thomsen's had her over for breakfast (waffles, ice cream and strawberries!)
and lunch (tacos!) Mickey's choice!
(In Tahiti, everything closes in the middle of the day.
The only restaraunt open for lunch is McDonald's and Mickey didn't want to eat there.)
She was able to have dinner at a "sweet mamie's" house (Sr. Fuller) from her ward.
"She had a party for me, invited all the Young adults in our ward and then they gave me that dress that I'm wearing and a snow globe. I had so much fun with them!"

^^ Mickey's birthday dinner ^^

^^Isn't Mickey just beautiful?! She looks so happy and filled with the Spirit!^^

^^ Mickey's birthday gifts from the party^^

"The birthday cake (below) made by Elder Cruz. (: hahah
He burnt it then tried to hide it by scrapping it all off and adding Nutella. (I DIED).
It was awful"

Mickey didn't receive our birthday box in time for her special day - but she did receive it that week.

"I received a call saying that I had to pay a $200 fine because it [the birthday box] was over the price limit. I almost cried and said it better be made of gold!!
Literally, when I opened the box and saw gold glitter confetti, I about died!"

(In Tahiti, packages are only allowed to be a certain value amount. If it is over that, they charge a fine. This is the first time we have ever gone over that amount. Usually that fee is paid at the time of mailing. If it's not, the missionary gets charged. Ha!
When we mailed the package, they said it was okay. Oops!)

TENDER MERCIES HAPPEN!!
"When Sr. Hoffman dropped it [the package] off at the house (she loves me) she told me that she'd pass on the bill and I shouldn't ask about it...if I received a call then I could start worrying.
But, it's been a few days and no call. So, I might not actually have to pay the fine."
Naturally, I told Mickey if they did end up charging her that I would pay it.
She said "It would be worth it."
Of the package, she said, "I LOVE IT! I cried. The whole package made me cry.
I actually ended up receiving it on a really hard day, so it helped me out."

^^ The $200 package ^^

On my end, I felt completely saddened on her birthday when she said the package hadn't arrived for her special day. Ahhh. I felt SO bad.
After finding out she received it on a hard day, everything made perfect sense.
My testimony that the Lord NO DOUBT knows what we need, when we need it is always being strengthened by tender mercies like these. Knowing Mickey received the package on a tough day really made it all okay...like it was meant to be that way the whole time.

THE AWFUL:
"Well, I was sick again. I think it's just going to be a normal thing for my mission.
I think I'm having digestive problems.
It's awful, it's like I'm bloated while starving all at the same time, and it's painful, then I'll have diarrhea. It happens about every other week for a few hours, but this week it was for three days in a row. A few people have told me that it's normal.
I'm not too stressed about it, the food is just really hard on me."

"Well, missionary work was less than successful this week. Seriously, so many people were drunk and it was just no good. This week, missionary work in Tahiti was AWFUL. We are hoping it gets a little better."

"Jess -You're more of a member missionary than practically anyone else that I know. If anything, you are a missionary for your family, and definitely for me."

Mickey's letter to the President:

Iarana te peretiteni!
It wasn't a wonderful week for me. I have had digestive problems since the beginning of my mission and this week they decided to act up again. On top of that, there wasn't much work a cause de toutes les fetes. I honestly felt like I lost my desire to be a missionary this week. Multiple times I found myself pleading to Heavenly Father to have that desire again and Saturday he reminded me of why I love it here! I am here to show people just a portion of how much God loves them, to make everyone feel important. A quote I love by Mark Twain states that "the two most important days of your life, are when you're born and the day you know why." But I'd like to change it a bit and say that the two most important days of your mission are the day you start and the day you know why! Starting a mission is hard but it shows God our efforts to diligently serve him, and the day we discover for ourselves why we're here just gives us every encouragement to stay. Sr. Colledge and I constantly remind each other to just keep going, no matter how many mistakes we have made in a day. I know I say this all the time, but she's an awesome person, not to mention a GREAT missionary! Thank you for being in tune with the spirit enough to know that we needed to be put together. I assure you that every day I discover a new reason why. The sector is going, slowly and surely. We saw our DMP for the first time in 5 weeks yesterday, and he didn't even talk to us. We have been improving the sector little by little with the help of the Lord.
Thank you for all that you do!

"I'm going to Moorea next week, so I won't have tons of time to email."

"LOVE YOU"

...until next week!

Love - Jess

Week 31

Joyeux anniversaire Mickey!!
It's Mickey's 21st birthday!!

^^YOU GUYS!! I'M 21!!!!^^
(Is this not the cutest picture?!)

At home, we did something fun for Mickey's birthday - we had a birthday party for her with a lot of people who love and miss her! It was so fun! It came about from an inspired thought the week before her birthday and luckily, we were able to pull it together! We made her a couple videos, sang 'Happy Birthday' to her and of course, because no celebration is complete without goodies - we had cake and ice cream. A friend of hers even blew out the candles in her place! It was so fun! This is what Mickey had to say about it:
"JESSS! YOU HAD A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR ME?!?!?!?!
crazy lady - I loved it!"

We went on to talk about her birthday:
"I stayed up til midnight on [New Year's Eve] and watched fireworks.
It was the first time I've appreciated my birthday being on New Years.

(:
I love fireworks!

Also, this morning I got to put on normal clothes with some make up, so I'm feeling pretty special.
I'm so grateful that it's Pday."

^^Mickey opening up one of three Christmas packages from us^^

When I asked about Mickey's week, she said the following...
"My week has been wonderful (:"
"I decided that I really do love my sector."
"This week really was all about enjoying the time I had with Sr. Colledge.
I love her, and my appreciation for her grows every day. We just had a good week."

^^Is this not the PRETTIEST "tag" photo you have EVER seen?! My fave so far!^^

Below is an letter Mickey sent me. Her weekly email to the President.
I thought it would be fun to share:

"Bonjour President!
I am sure you'll be receiving tons of mail with the goals of the missionaries, but I figured I might as well add mine to your inbox! I am looking forward to being here on Tahiti and doing the second half of my mission! Honestly, my goal for 2018 is to complete my mission with HONOR! I want to continue working diligently and loving what I am doing, whether or not it seems to be hard at times. I have also created a goal for myself to be happy, to carry "la joie" every where I go! -Sr. Colledge has helped me to recognize that I always know my weaknesses and I am always trying to be better, but at times I am so hard on myself a cause de mes faiblesses that I lose that joy. I want to focus more on the things that I do well this year.

Sr. Colledge and I still love being companions. We really saw growth in our companionship this week while in lessons with our amis. We can truly see that both of our personalities are needed in this sector at this moment on the mission. We get along well, and I can feel the spirit in every one of our lessons. I have appreciated seeing her teach, and learning how to follow the spirit.

My love for this sector grows every day, regardless of the petit moments of trials! I am grateful to be here!

Thank you for all you do!"

I don't hesitate at all to say Mickey WILL complete her full mission with HONOR as she desires. I love her humble heart - something I see as an easy accomplishment for her, she worries about. She will continue to be diligent and will continue to love it - because that's Mickey! ...even through her hardships because being positive is exactly what has helped her get through the hardest parts of her mission already. She has a heart of gold and is such an example. She's one of MY examples and I'm so grateful for my relationship with her. The Lord knew what he was doing when she placed me in my life 20 years ago and I couldn't be more grateful for where that has taken us. ♥

Mickey was able to make scripture covers this week! I love it - it seems so "Tahitian" to me!
She said, "It was SO fun!  - and it took WAY TOO much patience for me to ever do it again."

^^This turned out SO cute!^^

Below are some photos Mickey sent me of Christmas:

^^Christmas Party with Sr. Siale?! YES!

^^ A Christmas sleepover with the Sisters - this time in Mickey's room!^^

^^Mickey's Christmas and the tree we sent her ...apparently being used as a hat instead! Ha!^^

^^The stockings we sent to Mickey and Sr. Colledge^^

 ^^Skype-ing with her parents.^^

^^Skype-ing with us!!^^

^^Mickey's favorite Farani (French) Sr. Gandon!^^
Mickey said: "We did a puzzle together. ...actually, she did a puzzle and I watched 17 miracles.
(You and I both know that I don't have the patience for that.)

^^ Sr. Colledge celebrated her birthday on Dec. 20th so the Thomsen's (a senior couple) took them out for dinner at McDonald's. They are both 20 years old and it is the 20th anniversary for McDonald's in Tahiti. They all had a fun time. ^^

^^ Mickey bought Sr. Colledge this Pareo for her birthday.^^

 That's all for this week!

Love,
♥♥ Jess ♥♥

Week 30

SKYPE DAY!!
(aka: BEST DAY EVER! ...that is until Mickey comes home!!)

Mickey had the privilege of talking to us after all the other missionaries had already talked to their families, so what was supposed to be a 45 minute Skype time, actually turned into a
2 hour Skype!

It was SO GREAT to hear Mickey's voice, but to also see her glowing face was the BEST! She looked so beautiful and my dad, who was also in on our Skype said, "She looks like a missionary." ...meaning the Spirit was within her and her countenance had changed.
I couldn't agree with him more!

I won't bore anyone with the details of the call, but just know it was really special to us. The Lord certainly has a way of blessing the families that support missionaries and we were extremely grateful that the President was gracious enough to allow Mickey to talk with us. It really meant a lot to our whole family who has been on this journey thick and thin with her from the beginning.

Week 29

COMPUTER PROBLEMS
 AND TRANSFERS

So, for those that read these blog posts, you may have noticed there haven't been any for a few weeks. I'm sorry for that. Mickey hasn't said as much because she has had computer issues in Tahiti and I have also had some technical difficulties as well. But, we have managed to stay in contact so that's great! Especially since some missionaries in Tahiti haven't been able to talk to their families for 4 weeks or more. Mickey and I talked about that scenario and agreed that it wouldn't work well for us.

"I am doing really, really well. It was a good week for me! (: Again."

Transfers happened again and Mickey was able to stay with Sr. Colledge in the heart of Pape'ete!
"YAY!"
"Apparently, President really likes us together.
I'm grateful because I don't have to deal with another big change."

Mickey talked about Skype schedules for Christmas!!
"I will get 45 minutes with you guys and 45 minutes with my parents.
I AM SO PUMPED TO SKYPE!!!"
It was so fun just talking about Skype-ing together! I can't believe how fast Mickey's mission has passed by. Time seems to be flying by. I remember saying goodbye and the feelings of Mickey being gone that first month. It seemed to pass SO SLOWLY - and now, here we are talking about Skype because Christmas was around the corner! The Lord has truly blessed us and time has gone on even though she has been gone. Now, here we are, and she is more than half way through her mission.
She'll be home before we know it. :)

"I went to the dentist this week, and apparently I've had uneven pressure on my tooth and it's caused it to be inflamed, so he shaved it down and it's feeling a lot better."

We talked about the package she received from us. She is so cute. She is always so concerned about the cost and that she can't repay us. Haha. I tell her that's not the point and we would never allow her to repay us anyway. Ha! They bring her joy so that's all I need.
"I am so happy that you send me things. It's so so so nice.
I assure you that they do bring a smile to my face."

"Love you, love you."

"Big hugs!!!!"

^^The Thanksgiving Dinner we sent.^^

Mickey sent a TON of pictures this week since she hadn't for a little while (computer issues.)
Most of them are from her Island Tour last week. Enjoy!
